The statements of Pavel Babikov, the lawyer of the former schema-abbot Sergius (Nikolai Romanov), that the Sredneuralsky nunnery transferred money to the Yekaterinburg diocese, are an attempt to manipulate public opinion. Hegumen Veniamin (Rainikov), secretary of the diocesan council, said this.

Earlier, the media, citing a lawyer, reported that the monastery seized by the elder allegedly transferred about 20 million rubles to the diocese every year.

Hegumen Veniamin said that the contributions of local religious organizations are their obligation, openly stated in the documents.

"Until now, the funds received from the Sredneuralsky monastery in the diocese are reimbursement of utility bills, since all contracts with supplying organizations have been concluded with the Yekaterinburg diocese," TASS quoted him as saying.

He stressed that if the diocese refused to take these funds and stopped paying bills, terminated the contracts and disconnected the monastery from energy resources, then its inhabitants would have been the victims, Uralinformburo reports.

"This is an attempt to manipulate public opinion on the part of the lawyer with an emotional message of platitudes. We regret that the lawyer publicly discloses incorrect information, which, in addition to being fantastic, has nothing to do with the case of the former schema-abbot Sergius and will in no way be able to protect him from the charges that caused his arrest.", - said the representative of the diocese.

It is worth recalling that Nikolai Romanov was detained during the night assault on the Sredneuralsky women's monastery on December 29. On the same day he was taken to the capital. The excommunicated elder is accused of arbitrariness, inducement to commit suicide and violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion. The Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested him until February 28, 2021.
