According to the statistics department, last year there were 4 divorces per 1,000 people in our country. In total, there were 583,942 divorces. Fewer families broke up only in 1990 - that year the ratio was at the level of 3.8 per 1,000 people. The peak of divorces in Russia was recorded in 2002: 853 647 families made this decision. Since that time, the number of divorces has decreased every year. However, at the same time, the nominal number of marriages also decreased: if in 1990 1.3 million couples got married, then in 2018 only 893 thousand families decided to link their lives with an official marriage.

According to analysts, during this period, both marital "booms" and marital "lulls" were recorded. So, in 2011, there were 9.2 weddings per thousand citizens. But in 2018, the indicator became the lowest in the last 18 years: 6.1 marriages per 1,000 people.

Mortgage bonds

In a conversation with RIA Novosti, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics, PRUE. G.V. Plekhanov Alexander Timofeev noted that, if we talk about the so-called age dynamics in marriage, then marrying and getting married in Russia began much later than twenty years ago. “Late marriage, as a rule, is deliberate and therefore practically excludes subsequent divorce,” the expert sums up.

In addition, as the expert says, the rise in real estate prices also plays a significant role in strengthening marriage. This trend is especially relevant for large cities, where people simply have no other option except for housing borrowed on credit.

“Families take out a mortgage, which motivates them to learn to negotiate at home. After all, a loan, as a rule, concerns both husband and wife,”the analyst concluded.

At the same time, as Timofeev notes, there is another trend in big cities: there is a large percentage of families who prefer to live in a civil marriage. That is, this is an option for a family without official registration at the registry office. “This is a modern tendency - to have partnerships rather than marriage,” sums up the expert.
