8 Spicy Facts You Didn't Know About Sexual Life in the Middle Ages

Despite the assurances of some moralists that "there was no sex in Russia", there are historical facts proving that our ancestors had everything very well with their love life. Another thing is that due to traditions and circumstances, this very life had its own characteristics, which we will talk about further.

Untouched goods

It is noteworthy that up to a certain point, the attitude towards girl's innocence was very simple - a young man and a girl during the celebrations could indulge in a love affair, regardless of whether they later became husband and wife or not. Our ancestors associated sexuality until the 12th century with fun, fertility, and so on, so they saw nothing wrong with love affairs. Men were calm about the fact that their brides before the wedding indulged in passion with others. Moreover, if a girl got married "untouched", then the groom could be alerted - since no one loved the lady before him, then, most likely, she is worth nothing. The newly-made wife could even be kicked out for such an "insult", so the girls took liberties before the wedding. But then everything changed, and the fathers tried to marry their daughters as early as possible, while they were still innocent. With the filing of the same church, innocence began to be appreciated by future husbands and meant that a woman “saved herself” for her only one.

"The harlot" is not an insult

The very concept of a harlot arose in the 7th century and meant only that the girl was looking for a husband. At the end of the 8th century, the Magi even had to take responsibility - on the eve of marriage, deprive those ladies of their virginity who, for whatever reason, did not do it on their own. Usually, this action took place in a bathhouse, which further strengthened the association with brothels. From XII to XVII, unmarried women who had sexual intercourse before marriage and widows who hosted men began to be ranked as harlots, and by the 18th century the clergy managed to achieve that this word became a dirty word and meant girls of easy virtue, greedy for male affection.

The bigger the bust the better

Despite church prohibitions and admonitions, Russian men continued to marry precisely "stout girls" who had the sixth or seventh bust size, no less. It was believed that such a lady would be healthy and fertile. The girls used various tricks to make their bust "on the bridegroom" look as impressive as possible. It is known, for example, that in the villages at that time they used a special ointment for "breast growth". A spoonful of breast milk (taken from those who had just given birth), a spoonful of honey, a spoonful of vegetable oil were dissolved in a decoction of peppermint, and thus helped the bust become even more magnificent. Rumor has it that the breast really grew by leaps and bounds.

Favorite mother-in-law

At that time, fathers sought to marry their daughters as early as possible, so it is not surprising that girls left their father's house at the age of 12-13. Their mothers tried in every way to protect their daughters from the fatal outcomes of intimate "adult" life, and therefore, starting from the first wedding night and ending with the "maturation" of the girl's body (15-16 years old), they shared a bed with their son-in-law. Such relationships became so normal that not only the lawful husband, but also the church closed its eyes (it was enough for women to bow for two hours for several years in order to beg forgiveness for themselves). However, soon the age of marriage was raised and the need to love the mother-in-law in this way disappeared.

One wife is good, two is better

It is noteworthy that in our country, in some places, even polygamy was practiced (if you turn, for example, to the Tale of Bygone Years, you can find out that a man could have from two to four wives). In addition, one can recall Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich, who, in addition to 12 official daughters, had about 800 more concubines. At the same time, women were not “enslaved” by their husbands, and if they understood that they had become “unloved”, then they could almost officially go to the side in search of that gentleman who would offer them to become the “main” wife. Therefore, the young ladies calmly changed the faithful and enjoyed further the delights of family life.

Love games during sowing and holidays

Sexual amusements were part of important events in the life of our country - for example, during the sowing season, girls walked naked across the field in order to “transfer” their fertility to the earth and get a rich harvest as a result. And so that everything worked out for sure, men joined them and after "naked walks" the couples made love right on the ground (or violently imitated sex). Another important holiday in Russia - Ivan Kupala - usually ended with love games. At the beginning of the action, young people jumped over fires, sang songs and danced in circles, and after that they retired and indulged in passion.

You can't flirt, but steal - please

Surprisingly, if a man noticed that an outside gentleman was showing signs of attention to his wife, then he could immediately deal with him, but if this same daredevil, in a fit of passion, decided to steal (take away somewhere far away) a strange woman, then he did it from hands (the "deceived" spouse usually did not arrange a chase and only sighed with delight - out of sight and out of mind). For the sake of decency, the spouse grieved for a while, and then simply brought another wife into the house.

Baths as "unofficial brothels"

The real sexual peak came in the 16th century, when both the common people and the nobles were sophisticated in love pleasures, as best they could. They could have sex not only in nature, away from prying eyes, but also in taverns, during noisy feasts, and just on the street, having previously chosen a darker place. But the main (and most demanded) place for comfort remained the baths. And all because before Catherine the Great came to power, who decided to fight the Fall with all her might, there was no division of baths into male and female baths in the country. Accordingly, bath procedures often ended in sexual games.

By the way, weddings at that time were also celebrated for several days and the guests, as a rule, were already in such a cheerful state that they could easily change 3-4 partners for the entire period of the celebration (the common people even then managed to retire in the baths or indulge in passion somewhere in nature).
