The court in Beijing during the divorce proceedings ordered the ex-husband to pay his wife compensation of 50 thousand yuan, that is, 570.6 thousand rubles. This money was awarded to the woman for the fact that she worked around the house for five years of marriage and raised the common son of the spouses. The Chinese woman stated that her husband did not do this.

A man named Chen filed for divorce from his wife named Wang in 2020, writes The Guardian. The couple has been married since 2015. Wang did not want to divorce, but when she realized that this was inevitable, she demanded compensation for domestic work through the court.

The Chinese woman stated that for all five years of marriage, her husband did not perform any of the household duties, and also did not participate in the care of their common child.

Beijing's Fangshan District Court ruled in Wang's favor, ordering Chen to pay her monthly alimony of 2,000 yuan, that is, 22,800 rubles, and also pay her 50,000 yuan once in compensation for housework.

The judge explained that during the divorce proceedings, material values are usually divided, and housekeeping can be considered "intangible, but tangible value."

This is an unprecedented decision in the history of Chinese justice. It was adopted after the introduction of a new civil code in the country, according to which a spouse has the right to claim compensation in case of divorce if he or she has greater responsibility for raising children, caring for elderly relatives and housework.

On social media, this incident sparked a heated discussion: some users noted that Wang paid too little: in Beijing, a nanny earns more than 50 thousand yuan per year, and a woman has been married for five years and did all the housework.
