There is a huge gap between male and female humor. So, at least, we always thought. Well, if not abyss, then at least a wide dividing strip with stakes sticking out along it. You will cross into enemy territory with your jokes and you will be ridiculed, but not in the sense that your jokes are funny, but for just the opposite reason.
One group of scientists decided not to leave it this way and conducted research on this topic. What prompted them: an inquisitive mind or several unsuccessful attempts to cheer up girls at a party - we do not know. The only important thing is that there really is a difference in the gender perception of humor. And since there are consequences, there must be reasons. Therefore, we invite you to understand them together with us. Moreover, we have received some of the results of this study.
As Robert Benchley (one of the study participants) said, "There is no more pointless activity than trying to analyze humor." He said, but did it anyway. And together with his colleagues, he came to the conclusion that men prefer more aggressive humor. But not only. To him, scientists have attributed sexual and obscene themes for male jokes. However, some other studies (and our personal experience) argue that women are also close to humor of this kind. However, when jokes are directed against women themselves and are derogatory towards them, the reaction of women is really different from that of men. An even less obvious difference in the perception of humor concerns the most stupid and meaningless topics. Here both women and men react in almost the same way. The Comedy Club is a good example in this case. This show does not have a specific gender reference, and in many respects precisely because the humor there is averaged both at the level of topics and at the level of quality.
Then where is it all the same different? And why? Research answers these questions in the same order. The main difference is that men prefer witty jokes or jokes about risky and fundamental topics. Women, on the other hand, are more fond of anecdotal style of humor and one that deals with more everyday topics. For example, in our editorial office there was a joke for all the guys: "A nuclear missile with an unpredictable course turned out to be a banal ruble." But not all the girls laughed. Although this may be a special case, it is still indicative. Of course, the style of humor is not always gender-specific. Sometimes a person's interests, knowledge in a particular area, his education or cultural upbringing are important. A girl can laugh, for example, at political jokes, if she is interested in this issue. Just like a guy, on the contrary, he will not appreciate such humor if he is far from this sphere. But the overall picture of the research suggests that a woman is more likely to be amused by a funny incident with her acquaintance or a funny life story.
There is also an undeniable gender difference in the boundaries of acceptable humor. Men, for example, are more likely to joke about death than women. As psychologists say, this is most likely due to the desire of the stronger sex to suppress emotional stress in themselves. Therefore, they use such jokes as a distraction. It sounds quite logical, considering that women suppress their emotions much less often. In this sense, they are more inherent in humor on positive topics. For men, sarcasm often becomes an unconscious attempt to convince themselves and those around them that "things are not so bad."
An additional significant difference between the sexes is the use of self-actualizing humor. This long word means an attempt to demonstrate your dignity and uniqueness. And, as you understand yourself, men resort to such humor much more often than women. Moreover, it is inherent in the stronger sex to do this in mixed groups of people, while women mainly self-actualize with the help of humor only in a same-sex society. The reason for this is all the same male pride that tries to disguise excitement and insecurity with such humor. At the same time, for women, this theme of jokes is rather intimate, so they use it in more closed groups. 4 types of humor and what they say about you
