MOSCOW, February 15 - RIA Novosti. The reason for the sexual attraction of pedophiles to children was discovered by scientists from the Moscow State Psychological and Pedagogical University (MGPPU). In a unique study using a wide sample, they found personality immaturity in patients with pedophilia, which contributes to the bias of sexual desire to minors. The article was published in the journal Clinical and Special Psychology.

According to scientists from Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, pedophiles are similar to children in terms of mental and emotional maturity. That is why they are sexually attracted to them, because the self-image with such a disorder is distinguished by more pronounced infantile features.

"The choice of the preferred object in the case of pedophilia corresponds to the patient's self-image. The senses of sexuality and sexual activity were not formed in him. Sexuality remains infantile, that is, interests do not change with age and the attractive object for a pedophile will not be an adult woman, but a child. Sexual activity is also shifting and goes into communication and play interaction, "commented Nikolai Dvoryanchikov, Dean of the Faculty of Legal Psychology, Moscow State University of Psychology and Education.

The identified features are partly characteristic of offenders without pedophilia, experts said. This may be explained by the fact that the group of persons without a diagnosis included subjects who failed to diagnose pedophilia or who are just developing a disorder.

In the course of the study, scientists for the first time used original verbal and non-verbal techniques for recognizing emotions, the ability to empathy and empathy, the ability to put oneself in the place of another. Also, for the first time, experts worked with a large and unique sample for such a study: 87 people took part.

The results obtained, according to the authors of the study, will help to better understand the reasons for the criminal behavior of an individual who commit illegal acts of a sexual nature against children, as well as to clarify the diagnostic criteria for this group of persons. This will increase the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic and psychocorrectional programs, more accurately set goals and objectives for specialists, as well as track the effectiveness of treatment.

The work of scientists can become a step towards new research into the characteristics of interpersonal interaction, perception and understanding of emotional states in case of abnormal sexual behavior, experts say.
