As Ahmed Fahim (a pseudonym) admits, he is already 30 years old, and he is not married due to financial difficulties. However, he wanted to satisfy his need for intimacy without resorting to a habit that he had followed for over 13 years.

“I've often asked myself how time could fly by so quickly,” says Fahim. - Soon I met a girl ten years younger, but I ruled out the possibility of marriage because of the high costs. I tried to convince her of my intention to marry and became for her like a knight that she dreamed of and with whom she would be happy all her life. I wanted to have sex with her, but she insisted that this would only happen after the wedding."

He continued, “I started talking to her passionately. She had no experience in this kind of thing, so we started having phone sex every day. She considered me her husband, and so did I. In our fantasies, we did everything a couple does in bed, and we loved it. This went on for two years, after which she demanded that I officially ask for her hand, which was a blow for me."

“When I told her I didn't think about marriage, she was shocked, cried and eventually left me,” Fahim added.

Hamas is blocking porn sites

Large numbers of young people in the besieged Gaza Strip, which is also controlled by the extremely conservative authorities (Hamas), watch pornographic films. It's like a breath of air for them. According to past statistics, Palestine ranks sixth among the Arab countries in terms of the number of visits to pornographic sites. According to the Alexa website, in 2016, porn sites were included in the list of the 100 most visited Internet resources by Palestinians.

This situation prompted the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in the Gaza Strip in 2012 to impose a ban on pornographic sites. So, providers were obliged to block resources with similar content.

The Hamas internal security service justified these measures by the fact that Israel uses these sites to obtain confessions from Palestinian users.

However, addicted to visiting pornographic Internet resources, residents of the Gaza Strip managed to circumvent the bans by using special programs. As the programmer Khaled Abdel-Munim noted in an interview for the German edition of Deutsche Welle, these programs have proved to be very effective.

According to psychologist Ahmed Abu Namus, the revolution in technology, the spread of pornographic sites on the Internet, as well as the widespread popularity of social networks make it possible for a person to get everything that was forbidden for him throughout his life. This is one of the reasons why young people in Gaza have telephone sex. In the virtual world, they find what they lack in the real world, and thereby try to realize what they want.

Unusual phone marriage

Mohammed Ahmed, a 32-year-old graduate of the Faculty of Education, spends his free time in front of a computer screen. Sometimes he watched foreign or Arab films, but then he started playing porn. Since then, he began to sit at home most of the time and barely left his room to eat, since he was only interested in watching porn and masturbating.

He soon created a fake Facebook account with someone else's photo. He confessed to Raseef22, “I started sending girls subscription requests and they responded quickly thanks to the attractive photo in my account. I immediately informed the girls that I needed sex and nothing else, to which they answered me with a decisive refusal."

The man continued, “After several attempts, I found a girl whose story is no different from mine. She dreams of marriage, but cannot get married because her father refuses to communicate with anyone without a job or apartment. She had already lost all hope and quickly answered me. So she became my virtual wife. We do everything that spouses do in bed, but only over the Internet and over the phone. We also exchange photos and videos."

“Despite imaginary sex with a girl, I don't know what kind of relationship we have with her, and I'm not happy with myself. After talking with her, every day I look at myself in the mirror and ask if I am doing the right thing and who or what is to blame for this situation. Could it be the unfavorable conditions in the Gaza Strip? Or in parents who refuse a marriage request? - Muhammad admitted.

"I don't want to get married, so why can't we have girlfriends?"

Muhannad Ali, a 28-year-old resident of Gaza City, is from a wealthy family who works for a private company but refuses to marry. He dreams of a girl and those exciting details that he sees in films, TV series and social networks.

He failed to find what he wanted. In an interview with the publication, he admitted: “I don’t want to get married, marriage is a big responsibility, so why don’t we live, like in Western countries, where you can meet a girl and do anything with her, without opposition with any sides?

He continued, “I have been looking for a way to have sex outside of marriage for a very long time, but I haven’t found it. I felt despair and frustration. Once on social networks, I started chatting with a girl from Gaza and told her about what was going on inside me. Soon we started having phone sex.”

As the young man explained, in this girl he found what he had been looking for in recent years. They act like husband and wife, but the telephone remains a barrier between them. According to him, he offered her to have sex for real, but the girl refused because of fear of society due to the loss of virginity. She chose to keep the relationship over the phone.

Abu Ahmed Saleh of Gaza, a 48-year-old civil servant and father of four, described the behavior as blindly following Western films and TV series. According to him, if someone from his family has sex or does anything close to this outside of legal marriage, no one will forgive this, since such an act deserves the most severe punishment. This view reflects the general sentiment of Palestinian parents.

Ahmed Abu Namus blames everything on the economic conditions in the Gaza Strip - poverty and unemployment. Young people graduate from university in the hope of finding a job in their specialty in order to get married or leave and lead a normal life. However, many of them cannot do this due to the lack of jobs.

“Young people in the Gaza Strip are refraining from marriage due to difficult economic conditions and are looking for alternatives. Some of them leave, and those who cannot find money to leave the besieged sector are busy taking tramadol. This drug is very common among young people. Others find solace in phone sex,”Ahmed said.
